Scoliosis is a sideways curvature with rotation of the spine. However, the spine does have normal curvatures, but these can only be seen from the side. From the front, the spine should be completely straight.
The side curves make the spine stronger and more flexible when dealing with gravitational forces. This also allows the spine to distribute forces evenly along its curves, and it allows movement.
The spine gives structure to the body, allowing us to stand upright, and show good posture. But the most important part of the spine is that it protects your spinal cord. It also connects to all nerve endings that stem from your spinal cord and your central nerve system that connects to every other system of your body and coordinates appropriate functions for all of them.
The spine, combined with your skull, is the main protective system of your body, but the spine is designed to move, while the skull is not. So, when something affects your spine, it can quickly impact other things in your body.
One of the first tells of scoliosis is postural changes, unleveled shoulders, hips, rib arches, misalignment in posture, poor balance, and coordination. If scoliosis affects you deeper, it can impact you neurologically and start causing pain, such as radicular pain that goes down to the arms and legs.
As the spine shifts out of alignment, it can cause other things, not just pain, which is the case for children. As they grow with scoliosis, they do not feel pain because they are not experiencing compression, but they are impacted in other more visible ways. In adult scoliosis, however, the pain will often come first because scoliosis is compressive to gravity.
There are other effects of scoliosis that can be more severe than pain. When curves are left untreated, they can create functional issues in the body, such as cardiovascular and respiratory function. This is due to the curves becoming bigger and affecting the space in which the lungs are in, becoming compressed or altered, not allowing the lungs to move normally when you breathe. This is not always related to the size of the curve, it will be different from patient to patient, but as curves become bigger, they can impact lung function.
A larger curve can also have a neurological impact on the diaphragm and lead to spinal stiffness; therefore, the lungs can not expand as much when breathing.
When the curve is in the lower back, it can affect the nerves that go to your intestine and stomach, leading to digestive issues. In addition, as the spine compresses, it reduces the space in the patient's torso, which could lead to sluggish digestion, colon and small intestine function.
When the spine shifts out of alignment, it impacts how cerebral spinal fluid flows throughout the spine and into the brain. This can lead to headaches and migraines.
So, when left untreated, scoliosis can lead to an array of effects beyond back pain. It can affect organs, and tissues, create pain, and many other symptoms, especially as patients age and their scoliosis increases in category, causing more problems each time.
At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we recommend being proactive with your treatment. Treat your small curve to avoid developing a more severe curve, and the younger the patient, the sooner treatment is done, the better the results will be.
