A former Sunstone Way executive has filed a $4.5 million lawsuit against the nonprofit, one of Portland and Multnomah County’s largest homeless service providers, alleging whistleblower retaliation.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Multnomah County Circuit Court, says Kate Fulton, Sunstone Way’s former finance director, was unfairly terminated for attempting to expose what she describes as gross mismanagement and waste of public dollars by the nonprofit’s top executives.

Fulton was hired shortly after a Joint Office of Homeless Services audit found Sunstone Way had overbilled Multnomah County by $525,228, including $193,675 in inappropriate administrative overhead expenses.

According to the lawsuit, Fulton began suspecting financial mismanagement soon after starting the job.
