Richard "Dick" McDonald, who with his brother pioneered an innovative quick-service restaurant that evolved into McDonald's, has died in Manchester, New Hampshire.
He was 89.
The fast-food chain, based in this Chicago suburb, said he died on Tuesday of natural causes.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
Since the first McDonald's opened in California in the late 1940s, the company has spread across the globe, including branches in India and Russia.
Along with his brother, Richard McDonald pioneered a quick-service restaurant which has grown into the fast-food giant, McDonald's.
McDonald's can be found in virtually every corner of the world.
Originating in California, restaurants can now be visited in places such as India, China, Russia and Columbia.
Hoping to capitalise on the growing number of young families in the postwar years and an expanding roadway system, Dick and his brother Maurice created a self-service, drive-in restaurant in the late 1940s in San Bernardino, California.
The menu featured 15-cent hamburgers, 19-cent cheeseburgers, 20-cent malts and 10-cent french fries.
Dick McDonald was known as a marketing whiz, having devised the famous Golden Arches and the �Millions Served� signs, while his brother was known as the restaurant operations specialist.
In 1952, American Restaurant Magazine ran a cover story on the phenomenal success of the brothers' new concept.
Several years later, the McDonald brothers sold their proprietary rights in the business to Ray Kroc, and today's McDonald's Corporation was born.
In 1955 Kroc was granted exclusive rights by the brothers to develop and franchise McDonald's drive-in restaurants for the United States and six years later bought the rights to the entire McDonald system and all rights to it in the rest of the world.
Dick McDonald is survived by his wife, Dorothy, a step-son, and two grandchildren.
His brother, Mac, died in 1971 and Ray Kroc died in 1984.
There are now 23,000 McDonald's restaurants in 111 countries.
