Plant secondary metabolites are chemical compounds that are produced by the plant cells and have numerous biological potential for the human health through medical and pharmaceutical applications.

One of the examples of plant secondary metabolites is phenolic compound and the main class of phenolic compound is phenolic acids. It can be found in many plants and fruits as part of dietary components and scientifically proven to exhibit significant antioxidant activity. Antioxidant activity in human body has great potential and as well proven to significantly reduces many oxidative stress related diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular. Scientist have discovered the abundance of bioactive compounds especially in medicinal plants which can potentially be used to develop plant-based drugs and organic supplements for therapeutic treatments.

Organ cultures involves the stage where researcher choose different plant organs to be used as explants for culturing in artificial media with nutrients or culture from isolated medium. Plant organs can be the shoot tip, root, axillary bud tip, leaf and flower. It is important to determine which part of plants are the most suitable and efficient for the initiation of particular medicinal plant micropropagation. The most stable- and high performance cell lines can be transferred to bioreactor system for mass propagation.

Due to high demand in pharmaceutical industry to plant-based drugs containing bioactive compounds for clinical use and supplementary for health to reduce risk of diseases in individuals, bioreactor is used for mass propagation of variety of medicinal plant species with potential abundance of phenolic acids. Mass propagation using bioreactor is used to cultivate large scale of medicinal plants, in order to obtain high yield of bioactive compound like phenolic acids which then will be isolated for pharmaceutical industry use.

However, different plant species have different growth requirement. Hence, the bioreactor parameters and conditions need to be adjusted accordingly at different stage of plant growth to ensure the plants can survive upon plant acclimatization- adaptation of plantlets to a new environment. Moreover, the choice of suitable type of bioreactor is another important aspect to be taken care of in order to ensure the significant growth of particular medicinal plant species.
