New Directions in Sri Lankan Food in Colombo - Sri Lanka Travels (Dec 2023)

Описание к видео New Directions in Sri Lankan Food in Colombo - Sri Lanka Travels (Dec 2023)

Greetings Subscribers & Viewers:

This is the last of videos in Colombo, and I wanted to take things in a different direction.

Over the preceding months, I looked at a lot of YouTube content on food around #Colombo. There is lots of great content on kottu roti and a host of local specialties. However, there are folks out there, who like me, follow a variation of the Mediterranean Diet, and one thing you quickly realize while traveling is that eating out can me a minefield of foods and cooking techniques (lots of deep fried food, use of refined flour and sugar) that are easy to avoid at home. So, I wanted to show folks there are alternatives in Colombo that could provide travelers handy dining options. I also wanted to play with ChatGPT as a travel planning tool. With my search criteria as per the way I like to eat, the AI platform helped me plan the itinerary you see in this video. And, of course, nothing exactly went to plan but I am happy with the result.

This video is among the first that takes my content in a direction I want to keep exploring. Part food, part food sources and getting at the bigger story of how certain food businesses came to be.

The stops along the way include:

• The Commons Coffee Shop (various locations) - https://thecommonscolombo.com/index. With an emphasis on fresh ingredients, you can find healthier Sri Lankan and Western food here. They also have a thriving catering business.

• Good Market, Sri Lanka - https://www.goodmarket.global/info/sr.... From the Good Market Global website: “Good Market is a digital commons that makes it easier to find and connect with social enterprises, cooperatives, responsible businesses, civic organizations, networks, and changemakers who are creating a better world. The goal is to catalyze the transition to a new economy by increasing the visibility of the movement, making it easier for people to get involved, and facilitating trade, collaboration, and collective action. Good Market is set up as a self-sustaining, not-for-profit social enterprise. Any surplus is reinvested to expand services for the community.” I’d like to think that’s a cause that we all can get behind. If in Colombo on a Saturday, check out their outdoor market.

• Upali’s -   / upaliscolombo  . Rice and Curry when done well is the highest form od artistry in Sri Lankan cuisine, and Upali’s is an excellent purveyor. The story of a man who entertained his friends for years, and in retirement created a unique dining experience is one that is dear to my heart. This remains one of the best meals I had in #SriLanka, and it was very modern yet traditional at the same time. Take the time to explore the plates signed by local and international celebrities who dined here. Extra points if you can fine Virat Kohli’s plate.

• Dilmah t-Lounges (various locations) - https://www.dilmaht-lounge.com/sri-la.... Dilmah is the dominant international Sri Lankan brand of tea, and they are expanding their horizons. Akin to Starbucks “Reserve” concept stores, Dilmah is getting into the café business offering its teas, tea-based beverages and light food fare in an environment where their tea is the absolute focus. It is a handy stop if you are hanging around Colombo and want to enjoy an elevated tea experience.

• Galle Green/Galle Face Green – From Wikipedia: “Galle Face is an ocean-side urban park, which stretches for 500 m (1,600 ft) along the coast, in the heart of Colombo, the financial and business capital of Sri Lanka. The promenade was initially laid out in 1859 by Governor Sir Henry George Ward, although the original Galle Face Green extended over a much larger area than is seen today. The Galle Face Green is currently a 5-hectare ribbon strip of land between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean, being the largest open space in Colombo. This is a popular destination for children, vendors, teenagers, lovers, kite flyers, merrymakers and all those who want to indulge in their favorite pastimes next to the sea under the open sky. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, the land is busy with day trippers, picnickers and food vendors selling cooked crabs and prawns, slices of mango with pepper and salt.”

Of course, in addition, I snuck in a little cricket content, and a little drama of not being able to film in the vicinity of The House of Parliament.
