Happy Birthday SALLY ANN HOWES! The star of MY FAIR LADY on Broadway, who filled the very big shoes of JULIE ANDREWS, and talks in this clip from her interview for RICK McKAY'S BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE FILM TRILOGY of REX HARRISON's frustration with young actresses playing Eliza - and why, at the end of his career he wanted Sally Ann to come back and play Eliza one more time - and the role that microphones have in the equation of energy spent - then and now.

Sally Ann Howes may be best known for her starring role opposite DICK VAN DYKE in the legendary film CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, but she began her career in London with her famous father Bobby Howes on stage. She became a very successful child actress in film, starring in DEAD OF NIGHT opposite Sir Michael Redgrave, and in NICHOLAS NICKELBY and ANNA KARENINA opposite Vivien Leigh. She starred in the West End in PAINT YOUR WAGON opposite her father. Sally turned down MY FAIR LADY three times on Broadway and finally agreed when they offered her a higher salary than Julie Andrews. She was an immediate hit and the show remained sold out as she appeared on the cover of Life Magazine. She was last on Broadway in JAMES JOYCE'S THE DEAD in 2000, where she once again garnered rave reviews. She is much missed here, but is happily retired in Connecticut and Palm Beach.
