Sometimes a Viton O-ring is coloured brown but not always so how can you verify or check, whether a supplied O-ring is Viton or Buna-n?

Viton is heavy and has a specific gravity of about 1.80 while Buna-n is about 0.98. If you have a fluid that's in between these two weights, one will float while the other will sink. Tetrachloroethylene (also known as Perchloroethylene) has a specific gravity of about 1.64 so Viton will sink while Buna-n will float.

This video is showing a test of the O-rings supplied in a kit by Keyster for a 1980 Honda CBX. They are all Buna-n except one.
