Here's our list of these Top 10 Apocalypse-Ready Foods list:
10. Honey. Honey, can't spoil if stored properly. There are pots of honey that are thousands of years old and still edible. Honey can stay edible for years, even decades, but it's a natural product which means it changes over time. Those changes may include darkening color, thicker consistency, and different taste for honey. Changes in honey are actually good signs (so long as they're not signs of fermentation).
9. Milled Rice. Milled Rice (for example, white rice) if stored properly, will keep almost indefinitely on the pantry shelf. It’s a versatile food that provides carbohydrates to keep your energy up.
8. Canned Beans. High in protein, fiber, and various nutrients. Plus, they have a shelf life of 2-5 years (or more if stored well). Think of them as little cans of survival gold.
7. Peanut Butter Full of healthy fats, protein, and calories. And because it doesn’t need refrigeration, it's perfect for long-term storage. Plus, who doesn’t love a spoonful straight out of the jar?
6. Pemmican. At room temperature, pemmican can generally last anywhere from 1-5 years, but there are anecdotal stories of pemmican stored in cool cellars being safely consumed after a decade or more.
5. Hardtack. If properly stored, hardtack can last for years. Hardtack has been used for centuries and was a historic mainstay for pioneers, settlers, sailors & soldiers when traveling on long journeys.
4. Dehydrated vegetables. Dried foods keep 4-12 months depending on storage conditions. For a longer shelf life, store in a cool, dry, dark place under 60 degrees F. While it is not necessary, dried food (except for meat jerky) can be stored in the fridge to extend shelf life.
3. Peanut butter. You can keep peanut butter in the pantry for six to nine months (unopened) and two to three months (opened).
2. Salt. In terms of food safety, unopened packages of table salt can be stored indefinitely, while opened packages should be discarded after two to three years. When it comes to the other types of salts mentioned above, they may have shorter shelf lives due to their higher moisture content.
1. Spam. Shelf-stable canned ham (such as Spam) lasts 2 to 5 years on the shelf. After opening, it will generally be good for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator.
