This week's protocol:
1. Gather the supplies

2. Set up your cold working station:
two nesting containers with water frozen between them
tissue to wick away water condensate
a small paint brush
a good light source -
at least 5 empty fly food vials, and
the double convex lens you made in Class 4

3. Anaesthetize the flies:
a. the same 2-3 vials (for instance, Antennapedia and Ebony) will be anaesthetized in the fridge (not the freezer). Either (i) see how long it takes in the fridge for them to not crawl up the side of the vial, or (ii) always put them in the fridge (1-2 times per day) for the same amount of time (~60 minutes), and see how many iterations it takes for them before they're still crawling up the side of the vial at the end of the 60 minutes. Take notes!
b. for the rest of the vials, use the fly anaesthetizer (Alkaseltzer or baking soda+citric acid in a 2:1 ratio, plus vinegar, water or soda pop to evolve gas). Fit the fly vial over the top of the vial in which the gas is evolving, and wait a couple of minutes until the flies fall down.

4. Sort flies:
For each of the five types of the flies, anaesthetize and sort at least one virgin female each into 5 separate hydrated food vials. Then anaesthetize the males from the first of the five fly types, then sort at least one male into each of the empty vials. Take one female vial and one male vial, tap them both down so the flies don't escape, then quickly remove the plugs, tip the top of one vial onto the top of the other, and tap both sets of flies into the food vial before plugging it. Place a piece of tape over the plug and two sides of the vials to keep the plug in place.
