East Yorkshire-based folk/pagan metal band Cult of Frey (formerly known as Sleipnir) are renowned for their epic, atmospheric sound inspired by Norse mythology, Viking battles and odes to fallen warriors. The album By the Blood of Odin: Part 2 – Asgard (2025), released on UKEM Records, features seven tracks, including “Bloodline of the Aesir” and “The Glory of Valhalla”, with melodic riffs, guttural clean vocals, atmospheric keyboards and a theatrical approach, continuing the epic narrative begun in By the Blood of Odin: Part 1 – Midgard (2020).
British bands:
Forefather: From Surrey (Steadfast, 2008), Forefather combines pagan metal with melodic black metal, focusing on Anglo-Saxon and Norse themes. If Asgard emphasizes epic atmospheres, Forefather is a close reference.
Winterfylleth: From Manchester (The Hallowing of Heirdom, 2018), Winterfylleth explores black metal with folk elements and pagan themes. If Asgard has a contemplative vibe, it is similar.
Wodensthrone: From Sunderland (Curse, 2012), Wodensthrone mixes atmospheric black metal with Nordic inspirations. If Asgard uses keyboards to create ambience, it is a valid comparison.
Bal-Sagoth: From Yorkshire (Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule, 1996), Bal-Sagoth delivers blackened folk metal with epic narratives. If Asgard is theatrical, Bal-Sagoth is an influence.
Aeternus: Although Norwegian, Aeternus (…And So the Night Became, 1998) is often associated with the British scene for its influence. If Asgard mixes black and folk, it’s a reference.
International bands:
Týr: From the Faroe Islands (Valkyrja, 2013), Týr combines power metal with folk and Nordic themes, with clean vocals and epic anthems. If Asgard has grandiose choruses, Týr is an obvious base.
Borknagar: From Norway (Quintessence, 2000), Borknagar mixes black metal with folk and progressive, with icy atmospheres. If Asgard has a progressive side, Borknagar is similar.
Ensiferum: From Finland (Iron, 2004), Ensiferum is known for folk metal with melodic riffs and Viking themes. If Asgard focuses on battles, Ensiferum is a solid comparison.
Moonsorrow: From Finland (V: Hävitetty, 2007), Moonsorrow delivers epic pagan metal with long compositions. If Asgard has long tracks, it is an influence.
Amon Amarth: From Sweden (Twilight of the Thunder God, 2008), Amon Amarth combines melodic death metal with Viking themes. If Asgard has a heavier touch, it is a reference, although Cult of Frey is less death metal.
Shared characteristics:
Folk/pagan metal: Asgard features melodic riffs, atmospheric keyboards and Nordic themes, such as Týr, Ensiferum and Forefather.
Epic atmosphere: The narrative of battles and Valhalla aligns the album with Moonsorrow and Bal-Sagoth.
Varied vocals: The combination of guttural, clean and spoken word vocals reflects Borknagar and Winterfylleth.
UK scene: The UK origins connect the Cult of Frey to Wodensthrone and the Forefather.
Theatricality: The cinematic approach, with tracks like “Ravens Sing,” echoes Blind Guardian and Týr.
