🎥 The Garden of Words, Kotonoha no Niwa (2013)

On a rainy morning in Tokyo, Takao Akizuki, an aspiring shoemaker, decides to skip class to sketch designs in a beautiful garden. This is where he meets Yukari Yukino, a beautiful yet mysterious woman, for the very first time. Offering to make her new shoes, Takao continues to meet with Yukari throughout the rainy season, and without even realizing it, the two are able to alleviate the worries hidden in their hearts just by being with each other. However, their personal struggles have not disappeared completely, and as the end of the rainy season approaches, their relationship will be put to the test.

👦 Movie Director: Makoto Shinkai

Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese director, writer, producer, animator, editor, cinematographer, voice actor, manga artist and former graphic designer.

Shinkai studied Japanese literature at Chuo University where he was a member of juvenile literature club where he drew picture books. In 1999, Shinkai released She and Her Cat, a five-minute short piece done in monochrome.

His best knows films are The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004), 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007), Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011), The Garden of Words (2013), Your Name (2016), and Weathering with You (2019)

His favorite anime is Castle in the Sky (1986) by Hayao Miyazaki.

👧 Singer: Anri, Real Name: Eiko Kawashima

Anri debut release was the 1978 Oribia o Kikinagara (While Listening to Olivia), written by Amii Ozaki. Her song "Cat's Eye" was used as the first opening theme for the eponymous 1983 anime series Cat's Eye and debuted as No. 1 on Countdown Japan. It spent 4 weeks at No. 1 on the Oricon chart It was one of the first J-pop songs used as an anime theme song. Another one of her hits from the same year was Kanashimi ga Tomaranai (I can't stop the loneliness). Both songs appeared on the 1983 album "Timely!!". She also appeared at the Red and White New Year's Music Special at the end of that same year. Another hit single she had released is "Goodbye Boogie Dance" from November 1983.

Other hit songs include Summer Candles and Dolphin Ring, both of which became standard songs played at Japanese weddings and receptions. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Anri's albums were bestsellers. She has had highly successful tours—one with attendance of almost 100,000—and toured Hawaii for the first time in 1987. She sang the closing theme for the 1998 Winter Olympics at Nagano. In 2002, she began collaborating with jazz fusion guitarist Lee Ritenour, who produced her 2002 LP Smooth Jam – Quiet Storm.

With the renewed popularity of city pop, and her songs having been sampled by many new artists of the vaporwave and future funk genres, Anri has also enjoyed new popularity outside of Japan.
