Seoul was called "Hanseong" (漢城) or "Hanyang" (漢陽) during the Joseon dynasty. Seoul’s historical roots stretch back over 2,000 years.

During the Joseon dynasty, Seoul (Hanseong) was formally designated its capital in 1394. In the early 20th century, Seoul was under Japanese rule and temporarily known as Gyeongseong.
