Winter Pruning of Espaliered Apple and Pear Trees

Описание к видео Winter Pruning of Espaliered Apple and Pear Trees

If summer pruning of fruit trees, like apple and pear, is all about getting fruit spurs then winter pruning of my espaliered fruit trees is all about form and function.

Pruning fruit trees, including apple and pear, in the winter is about trying to get the right shape of the tree. At this time of year the leaves are off and you can actually see the scaffolding of the tree and prune to your desired shape and height. Pruning in the winter will encourage sucker branches to grow the following summer but we'll take care of those later in the year.

I love the espaliered look of these fruit trees. The espalier style of pruning keeps your trees at a level that is easily managed and it keeps the garden looking nice and tidy.
