In this video I thinned the fruit on my Sonny's Yellow Plum tree and explain why it is important to thin plums off a plum tree that's trying to over-crop. In addition, I give a description of Sonny's Yellow and discuss its limited availability. This is the best yellow plum that I know about for the SE Georgia climate and disease pressure.


I wasn't ready to say this when I made video, but I'm not ready to expressly say that I do not recommend Byron Gold in this part of Georgia. In fact, just today, I removed a Byron Gold plum because it was showing evidence of having bacterial stem canker. This is the third Byron Gold tree in a 14 year period that I've tried to grow that got removed before reaching maturity on account of contracting bacterial stem canker. There is yet another Byron Gold still in the orchard that looks good and is actively growing. I will keep that tree for as long as it stays healthy. But even if it works out great, 25 % success rate for a plum variety staying healthy long enough to ripen a plum is really poor. Sonny's Yellow is much, much more of a sure thing if you are lucky enough to find one.
