India has officially launched its most ambitious defense project to date: the development of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. On May 27, 2025, the Ministry of Defence approved the execution model for the AMCA program, marking a significant milestone in India's quest for self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

The AMCA is designed to be a twin-engine, single-seat, all-weather multirole combat aircraft, incorporating advanced stealth features, supercruise capability, and state-of-the-art avionics. It aims to perform a variety of missions, including air superiority, ground attack, and electronic warfare.

The project is spearheaded by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In a strategic move to accelerate development and production, the government has opened the program to private sector participation, inviting bids from domestic companies to work alongside Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

This initiative comes at a crucial time, as the Indian Air Force (IAF) seeks to modernize its fleet and reduce dependence on foreign aircraft. The AMCA is expected to complement existing aircraft like the HAL Tejas and the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, enhancing the IAF's operational.

The first prototype of the AMCA is anticipated to be rolled out by 2028-29, with mass production slated to begin by 2035. This timeline aligns with India's broader defense strategy to bolster indigenous manufacturing under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

By embarking on the AMCA program, India joins an elite group of nations—such as the United States, Russia, and China—that possess the capability to design and manufacture fifth-generation fighter jets. This development signifies a major leap forward in India's defense and aerospace sectors, reinforcing its position on the global stage.
