A 21-year-old pregnant woman belonging to a tribal community in Dahanu allegedly died of heat stroke while walking to and from the primary health centre (PHC), where she had gone for treatment for anaemia on Friday, two weeks before her due delivery date. Sadly, her unborn child also did not survive. Maharashtra is currently experiencing one of its worst heatwaves in years, with nearly 1,500 cases of heat stroke and a dozen deaths already reported. According to data from the directorate of health services, the number of cases has doubled compared to last year, with a significant portion of the cases and deaths linked to the Maharashtra Bhushan award ceremony held in Kharghar. The state health department did not respond to questions regarding how there were 12 heat-related deaths when the Kharghar tragedy alone had seen 14 fatalities.
