1992년 앨범 ‘Never mind’ 두 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 차트에서 32위에 오른 곡입니다.
리더이자 보컬인 '커트 코베인'은 이 곡 나오는 가사처럼
Come as you are, as you were, As I want you to be(있는 그대로, 있는 그대로, 내가 원하는 대로.) 사람들이 틀에 얽매이지 않고, 스스로가 원하는 대로 살아가길 바라는 메시지를 전달하려 한거 같습니다.
예전 어릴 때를 돌아보면 남의 시선을 얽매여 선택의 순간에 고민했던 기억이 있습니다. 지나고 보니 중요한 건 본인의 선택이고 그에 따른 책임 또한 남에게 떠넘길 수 없는 본인이 감당해야하는 무게라는 걸 많은 실수들을 통해 조금은 알게 된거 같습니다.
학생 때는 멜로디가 좋아 무심코 들었던 노래가 요즘에는 여러모로 생각을 많이 하게 되는 거 같습니다.
이곡에서 나오는 드럼라인은 단순하지만 꽤 인상적입니다.
0:17 인트로 부분을 라이드 심벌로 연주 후에 벌스(1절) 부분까지도 계속 라이드 심벌로 연주합니다. 보통은 벌스(1절) 부분에서 하이 햇으로 연주를 많이 하곤 합니다.
0:45 이어서 후렴으로 넘어가기 전에는 라이드 심벌을 마치 하이 햇 오픈을 점점 크게 하듯이 라이드 심벌로 점점 크게 연주합니다.
0:49 후렴은 4비트로 심벌을 연주하다가 스내어를 16비트 악센트로 연주하는 부분인데요 보통 후렴에서는 깔끔하게 리듬을 치는 게 일반적이지만 이 곡에서는 드럼이 박력 있게 사운드를 주도하면서 음악을 이끌어가고 있습니다.
곡의 전반적인 템포가 인간적?!이게도 곡의 흐름에 따라 유동적으로 미세하게 왔다 갔다 합니다.
이런 경우 의도성이 있다고 생각하는데요
녹음을 할 때 일반적으론 드러머가 메트로놈을 끼고 박자에 딱 맞혀 녹음을 합니다. 저의 짧은 밴드 생활 경험상 추측하자면 밴드 멤버들 간의 호흡을 중요시해 메트로놈 박자가 방해 요소가 되어 뺐을 거라 생각합니다.
더 나아가 라이브에서는 관객과의 호흡을 위해서 의도적으로 빼는 경우도 자주 보곤 합니다.
여러모로 이곡의 가사처럼 드럼도 정형화된 드럼 연주가 아닌 본인이 원하는 대로?! 흘러가는 대로 연주한 게 아닌가 싶습니다^^

When recording, the drummer usually puts on a metronome and records in perfect time. Based on my experience in my short band life, I think that the metronome beat was a distraction and was removed because of the importance of breathing among the band members.
Furthermore, in live performances, it is often seen that they are deliberately omitted to harmonize with the audience.
In many ways, like the lyrics of this song, the drums are not standardized drumming, but the way you want them?! I guess I didn't play as it flowed ^^
