No matter where Coach Todd Simon coaches, one thing is guaranteed: his team is going to pull off some big upsets & completely piss Vegas off. Coach Simon & his staff are in the process of making BGSU men’s basketball a force in the vaunted Mid-American Conference (MAC). If you’re into old-school pressure defense, you need to make a point of following the 2025-2026 BGSU Falcons. They play each defensive possession as if it’s the defensive stand to win the game. They apply heat to the ball handler(s) & overplay the passing lanes like teams did in the 1980s. Offensively, they get out & go! Yes, they score a lot of points off turnover they force, but they are also an efficient half-court offensive team. Take it to the bank, Coach Simon’s Falcons play HARD!


Over Coach Simon’s career, he has forged a reputation for being a “Giant Killer.” His team has pulled huge upsets over the following opponents:
vs. Nebraska (2019): In November 2019, Southern Utah, under Simon, defeated Nebraska (a Big Ten opponent) in a stunning 79-78 double-overtime victory. This was the Southern Utah program's first victory over a Big Ten opponent and first road win against a Power Five team since 1996.
vs. Idaho (2018): In the quarterfinals of the 2018 Big Sky Tournament, Southern Utah achieved one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history by defeating Idaho 92-78, shooting 60% from the field and from the three-point line.
vs. Kansas State (2025): More recently, Simon's Bowling Green Falcons secured a significant road win against Kansas State (a Big 12 opponent) with an 82-66 score on December 1, 2025.
In a 2022 college basketball game, the Southern Utah Thunderbirds nearly upset the then-reigning national champion No. 6 Kansas Jayhawks. The unranked Thunderbirds led for much of the game, with 25 lead changes in total, before ultimately falling 82-76 in a hard-fought battle at Phog Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.
