An ionic compound is a substance made of ions held together by strong ionic bonds which are electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions. The electrostatic forces keeping the ions in a fixed position are very strong, so ions in a solid ionic compound are not free to move. For a substance to conduct electricity it must contain charged particles and they must be free to move. Therefore, as ions are charged, the ionic compound must be molten or aqueous to conduct electricity. If electrodes connected to a power pack are inserted into a molten or aqueous ionic compound, an ammeter will show an electric current and/or a bulb will light up showing an electric current is flowing.
