James Maury Henson was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi. He was a prolific puppeteer, actor, inventor, filmmaker, animator, and screenwriter who received worldwide acclaim for being the creator The Muppets in 1955.

When he was still in high school, he started building his first puppets. His first successful show, Sam and Friends, was produced while he was just a freshman in college and it showed off early versions of some of The Muppets.

After graduating from college, Henson worked on various commercials and short films. One short in particular. Time Piece would earn him an Academy Award for Best Short. It was really after earning his accolade and starting his own company Muppets Inc. (later The Jim Henson Company) that he became a hot commodity from advertisers and producers of various shows looking to spice up their offerings.

He developed several characters for Sesame Street after joining the cast in 1969 and then went on to produce The Muppet Show in 1976. Some of Henson's other successful shows and films were Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth.

Henson passed away in 1990 at the age of 53, but his legacy will live on for many years to come. In this video, we're going to take a look at his life and career. To call him a puppeteer is an understatement. Jim Henson was a visionary.
