"Why 20,000 Morans Protested in Assam 🚩 | Sociology of Identity & Recognition"
Before the Prime Minister’s visit to Assam, 20,000 people from the Moran community staged a massive protest demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) recognition.

But who are the Morans?
The Moran are an indigenous Assamese community, considered descendants of the Ahom kingdom. They mostly live in Upper Assam, speak a distinct dialect of Assamese, and are engaged in agriculture and tea cultivation. With a rich culture — from Soklong dance to Me-Dam-Me-Phi ancestor worship — they carry a strong identity.

Without ST recognition, the community feels deprived of welfare benefits and opportunities. Through a sociological lens, this protest is an example of ethnic mobilization and identity politics. As Durkheim said, when a group feels excluded, the collective conscience weakens, leading to protest movements.
