UNESCO world Heritage site The Elephanta Caves are located in Western India on Elephanta Island  Mumbai. The architecture and forested area of Elephanta Caves have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Sites, since 1987
The Elephanta Caves' past is shrouded in mystery, with no conclusive explanations. Some attribute their construction to the Pandavas, while others attribute it to Banasura, a Shiva-devotee demon. According to local legend, they were not erected by human hands at all.
The Rashtrakuta rulers built the Ellora Elephanta caves. They were constructed by cutting the walls of high basalt steep rock walls. UNESCO has designated 34 caves in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state as a World Heritage Site.
