1. At Birth (0–3 days old):

They hatch naked, blind, and very small — only about 1.5–2 cm long.

Their skin is pink or reddish, with visible veins.

They have “milk spots” (tiny white dots) on the corners of their mouths to help parents feed them in the dark nest.

They rely completely on their parents for warmth and feeding.


2. Early Growth (4–7 days old):

Dark pin feathers begin to appear on their wings and back.

Their eyes start to open around day 7.

They grow rapidly and become more active in the nest.


3. Mid Growth (8–14 days old):

Feathers start to open and show colors (mostly grey and white at first).

They begin to look more like small birds.

Parents continue feeding them soft seeds and crop milk.


4. Fledging (15–21 days old):

Chicks start flapping their wings and may leave the nest around 18–21 days.

At this stage, they are called “fledglings.”

They are still dependent on parents for food for about another week.


5. Juvenile Stage (3–6 weeks):

They have dull grey or brown plumage.

Male chicks don’t yet have the bright orange beak or cheek patches.

By 6 weeks, they begin to eat seeds on their own and are nearly independent.


6. Adult Plumage (8–12 weeks):

Males develop their orange beak, cheek patches, and black-and-white zebra stripes on the chest.
