World's largest LNG terminal test runs in Hong Kong, capable of handling 2 mega ships simultaneously

The world's largest offshore liquid natural gas terminal in Hong Kong has started pilot run after it successfully accomplished unloading and pipeline transmission, China's national oil company CNOOC Ltd., said on Sunday.

The terminal is the largest offshore energy infrastructure construction project in Hong Kong in recent years. It mainly includes an LNG terminal, a double berth offshore wharf and two seabed pipelines.

As the world's first full-steel structure double-berth terminal, it can support simultaneous berthing and operations of two world's largest floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) or LNG carriers.

The LNG can be transferred through the seabed pipelines to two major power stations of Hong Kong, providing stable and clean fuel for power generation.

"The wharf can be used for 50 years, more than twice that of a conventional offshore LNG terminal. It can also handle the berthing impact force 4.9 million times each year from a 2,400-ton ship every time," said Liu Zhigang, deputy manager of the Hong Kong LNG project.

Launched in 2020, the project has accomplished construction and installation of 28 structures weighing 35,000 tons, and laying of 63 kilometers of seabed pipelines.
