Live & Queer is a talk show/video podcast produced by QCC. We get real with Bay Area LGBTQ+ artists about what they’re doing, what inspires them, what they’re trying to accomplish, and the way their art contributes to LGBTQ+ and beyond culture & movements.
On this episode, we'll be talking about all about NQAF with guests from some of the other shows in the festival. Join us for the first time at an in-person taping to find out more about what's happening, what you can expect and what you don't want to miss! This show will be both in-person and livestreamed to QCC's Youtube channel so you can attend from anywhere around the world. About Gaia WXYZ:
Gaia WXYZ (pronounced “wise”) is a multimedia artist and cartoonist living in Oakland, CA. They create autobiographical comics about being Black and Queer. In 2020 they graduated from CCA’s MFA in Comics program. One year later they taught the first-ever comic art class at UC Berkeley, and currently teach at CCA as well. They have tabled at numerous comic and zine festivals, and participated in panels at the San Francisco Zine Fest and Queers & Comics Conference in New York. They were included in the ground-breaking LGBTQ+ comics documentary No Straight Lines. This past year their comic The Tale of Daisy and Gaia was selected for the 2022 Art on Market Street Project; their work was on display in MUNI bus shelters from the Ferry Building to Civic Center. Gaia is quickly becoming a respected voice in the comics world.
About OYSTERKNIFE:
OYSTERKNIFE is a duo, Chibueze Crouch and Gabriele Christian, working in directing and performing collaborative live art. For the past six years, they have presented four original works - "the miracle of loss will find you", and their triptych of works "mouth full of sea", "mouth//full", and "m|ou|f" - as well as collaboratively directed Time of Change with Joe Goode Performance Group on the streets of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. They have presented these works at African Arts and Culture Complex, CounterPulse, UC Santa Cruz, ODC, and Dance Mission Theater. Their next big production - mouf//full - is a reimagining of their original production mouth//full, and will premiere at Grace Cathedral in February 2024.
About Tony Taylor (It’s Qwere):
Tony Taylor is a storyteller and community builder who was born curious and is rarely amused. He is the founder of ItsQwere, a community social nonprofit organization that highlights the experiences of queer Black and Brown folks through conversation salons, social events, and virtual engagements. One thing that does amuse Tony is Mighty Real: A Sketch Variety Show, ItsQwere's live comedy production featuring a cast of women and written by queer comedy veterans. On June 17, Mighty Real will perform a special presentation at SOMArts as part of National Queer Arts Festival. Tony studied journalism at San Francisco State University and splits his time between the Bay Area and Philadelphia.
About Maya Chinchilla:
Maya Chinchilla, author of “The Cha Cha Files: A Chapina Poética,” is a writer, educator and media maker. She teaches as a lecturer in Chicana/o Latino/a/x Studies, creative writing, English and LGBTQ studies. Drawing on a tradition of truth-telling and poking fun at the wounds we carry, Maya's writing and performance explores themes of historical memory, family, tenderness, sexuality, and alternative futures. She is also the editor of the forthcoming “CentroMariconadas,” an anthology of queer and trans Central American writing, and has been working on some pandemic projects including: co-hosting three seasons of a women of color-centered sci-fi podcast; writing and producing the show "Central American Unicorns in Space;" taking online Afro Puerto Rican Bomba classes and conducting online writing coaching sessions for creatives and writers alike. www.mayachinchilla.com
