STORYLINE:

Police said Sri Lanka's foreign minister died after being shot by unidentified gunmen near his home in Colombo on Friday, a police spokesman said.

Lakshman Kadirgamar, 73, was taken to the National Hospital in the capital for emergency surgery after being shot in the head.

Kadirgamar is from Sri Lanka's Tamil minority and is a close aide of President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who appointed him foreign minister in April 2004.

He previously held the position from 1994 to 2001.

Kumaratunga rushed to the hospital to see him and the military closed the road leading to the facility.
