Pyorrhoea – most of us have not come across this term though a large number of people experience this problem. Confused? Well, “Pyorrhoea” is a dental condition that is caused by bacteria. In simple words, it is the inflammation of the gums which mostly affects the membrane surrounding the roots of the teeth. This leads to discharge of pus and loosening of the teeth. Also known as periodontitis, common symptoms of this ailment include bleeding while brushing, sore gums, bad breath, pain while eating and swollen, red or recessed gums.

The main cause of pyorrhoea is accumulation of bacterial plaque which mostly occurs due to poor oral hygiene. There may be other causes like incorrect or hurried brushing, improper use of toothpicks, untreated gum injuries or stagnation of food particles. Dental health also depends upon eating habits to a great extent. Consumption of excess sugar and other unhealthy foods can increase the germ count in your mouth, leading to pyorrhoea. Lack of certain vitamins or minerals also acts as trigger factors.
