Abstract: While we can’t predict when the next Alpine Fault earthquake will occur or exactly how it will impact us, we can combine our collective knowledge from past events with learnings from more recent responses to help us understand and be better prepared for this high-probability, catastrophic-level event.

Over the last seven years, the AF8 Programme has proven itself a critical mechanism in progressing collective action towards improving our readiness and response planning for the next Alpine Fault earthquake in the South Island. The programme provides a dedicated platform to enable informed decision-making to be translated into action, which is underpinned by world-leading science and a wealth of emergency management experience. The AF8 Programme continues to be an exemplar for how we can work together, across science, policy, and practice to tackle the complexity and increasing frequency of natural hazard events in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This seminar highlights some of the challenges, learnings and successes from the AF8 Programme in undertaking this work.

Bio: Alice is the AF8 Programme Manager. She is a design and communications expert who specialises in making complex information accessible, applicable and actionable. Her work typically bridges the interface between research and practice, drawing on design methodologies to build two-way engagement opportunities that enable knowledge exchange and informed decision making. Alice grew up not too far from the northern end of the Alpine Fault and the Red Hills of the Tasman region. She holds undergraduate degrees in design, communications and media and a Master of Applied Science from the University of Otago, Dunedin, and also a Master of Disaster, Design and Development from RMIT University, Melbourne. Prior to joining AF8, Alice worked as a consultant for various NGOs and IGOs in Europe and Asia.
