Fall is the perfect time for applying beneficial microbes directly into your soil profile using extracts made from high-quality finished compost or vermicast. This crucial step allows the microbes loads of time to get organized over the winter, ensuring your plants are very happy by the time spring arrives.

The Technique: We apply the extract using a watering can, creating a gentle "rain shower" around the root zone. Aim to keep the liquid extract separate from the sludgy bits at the bottom, as these thicker pieces can potentially clog up watering can holes.

Why Depth Matters: When performing a soil drench, the ideal penetration depth for the extract is the top 7.5 cm (three inches) of soil. This shallow penetration is targeted because the top of the soil surface is the aerobic zone where most of the critical soil food web activity occurs. Use as much extract as your soil requires to penetrate that deeply.
