In an interview with Fox News, former President Donald Trump shared new details about the day he was shot in the ear and nearly assassinated in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. He discussed his trip from the rally to a local hospital and revealed where his son Barron was when news of the assassination attempt broke.
Tens of thousands of Trump supporters attended a second rally at the same location where he was shot. Fox News’ Laura Ingraham asked Trump if he was on the verge of tears during what she described as an emotional moment as the rally began. Trump responded, “Do you want a president that cries? I don’t think so, so I’ll say absolutely not.”
At the second rally, a moment of silence was held at 6:11 p.m., the exact time shots were fired 12 weeks ago, in honor of Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee and firefighter who lost his life in the gunfire.
“Corey didn’t make it. And I felt we had an obligation to Corey to come back here,” Trump said. “They’re (Comperatore’s family) the first people I greeted and met; I knew them before from the tragic event, but they’re having a real hard time. It was so crazy, the whole thing was a crazy time. We had to sort of come back and complete the circle. And that’s what we did.”
Trump recounted the moment he hit the ground, telling Ingraham he had heard the whizzing of bullets past his head and felt the sting of the shot in his ear. He described the immediate shift in the crowd when he stood up, pumped his fist, and yelled, “Fight, fight, fight.”
“It was dead silent; even though I was standing up, people didn’t know if I was alive or not,” Trump said.” And then when I did the fist pump, everyone realized — and everyone was screaming ‘USA, USA!’ It was the craziest day. It was a crazy time.”
Trump credited the Secret Service for their actions that day, noting that he arrived at a local hospital within seven to eight minutes after getting into the Secret Service vehicle. He praised the staff, stating the hospital was closed but ready to treat him.
As Trump was escorted out of the rally, his family was learning about the situation. He noted that Barron was playing tennis when someone informed him of the shooting.
“Barron was playing tennis with his friends, and someone ran over and said, ‘Your father’s been shot, he’s been shot, Barron,’” Trump said. “He came in, ‘Mom, mom, what happened?’ and then they saw me get up, and then they saw the fist pump.”
While Trump and his family have praised the Secret Service’s efforts, Congress has scrutinized the agency for perceived shortcomings that allowed a bullet to come so close to killing the former president.
Following a second assassination attempt last month, the agency remains under congressional scrutiny, and a task force is currently investigating both attempts. Security around Trump has also increased since the assassination attempts.
