Cuchara Mountain Park - ABANDONED SKI RESORT

Snowboarding Cucharas Mountain Park abandoned Ski resort near La Veta, CO with my dog. This place has been closed for the last 20+ years but is free to snowboard, ski, or sled if you are willing to hike it or skin it.

History:
Cuchara originally opened for the 1981-1982 ski season as Panadero with two double chairs and a rope tow. Club Corporation of America (CCA) and operated Cuchara for the 1987-88 season. CCA had no prior ski area experience and a bad snow year led to a low skier turnout. Sunbelt Savings decided to close the ski area until a new owner could be found. Cuchara
remained defunct from 1989-1992. The area reopened for the 1992-93 season. He operated the area for the next two years before running out of operating cash. The Colorado Tramway Board caught the two brothers operating the ski lifts during the 1996-97 season without a permit. The brother's private operation was quickly closed down and Cuchara sat idle again. A blizzard hit Colorado's Front Range in 1997, giving
Cuchara a nice base and record ski attendance. The ski area operated for the 1997-98, 1998-99, and 1999-00 ski seasons on a four-day operating schedule until Lau closed down both Cuchara and Ski Rio for good. Since the year 2000 Cucharas Mountain Park has not been operated as a ski area, in 2017 Cucharas Mountain Park was purchased by Huerfano county and they are planning to reopen it as a ski area for next season 21/22.

Backyard snowboarding after a big snowstorm got lucky I took my board and was able to snowboard right off my trailer. Easily covered over 13 miles around the Ranch looking for hills I could ride down. It was one of the first snows of the year so there was no under layer and was riding over rocks and tree branches, the board took a few core shots, but is ok was using my beater board. I had a lot of fun as it was my first ride of the year and got to practice my ollies. Also got to train my husky a little on snowboarding etiquette, I am planning to take him a lot this season.
