गर्मी में किडनी के लिए ज़हर हैं ये ड्रिंक्स | Kidney Patients Must Avoid These Drinks in Summer
Summer is the season for cool drinks and refreshing sips. Whether it's buttermilk, mango beverages, or a chilled glass of tea, these favorites are found in almost every home. But for kidney patients, some of these popular choices can actually do more harm than good. In this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan will guide you on which drinks to avoid, the hidden risks behind them, and healthier, kidney-friendly options you can safely enjoy instead.
𝟭. 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸 (𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗮𝘀)
Buttermilk, made from curd, is packed with beneficial lactobacillus bacteria and lactic acid. While it's great for most people, kidney patients should be cautious. When the kidneys aren't functioning well, they can't clear acids properly. This leads to a buildup of lactic acid, making the blood more acidic and increasing the risk of metabolic acidosis, which can harm kidney health.
𝟮. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗼 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸
Mango drinks are refreshing and popular during the summer, but they can pose a risk to kidney patients. These drinks contain natural acids that lower the body’s pH. If the kidneys are weak, they struggle to eliminate these acids, leading to a condition called metabolic acidosis. This can cause a rapid rise in creatinine levels and worsen kidney function.
𝟯. 𝗧𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲
While tea and coffee are everyday favorites, they can be problematic for kidney patients. Many teas contain oxalates, which can lead to kidney stones. In weakened kidneys, oxalates aren’t filtered properly, putting more strain on the kidneys. Additionally, the caffeine in tea and coffee can raise blood pressure and dehydrate the body, both of which are harmful to kidney health. Over time, tea can also reduce iron absorption.

When the heat is on and thirst strikes, a chilled cup of milk is a safe and soothing choice for kidney patients. Add a bit of sugar for sweetness if desired, and sip it slowly. This will help hydrate the body without overwhelming the kidneys. Just be mindful not to drink too much at once — keep it to one cup at a time to stay within safe limits.
