Wat is Diwali?

Met Diwali vieren hindoes het feest van het licht. Het woord 'Diwali' betekent 'een rij lichtjes'. Die lichtjes zijn traditioneel aardewerken lampjes die branden op olie of gesmolten boter. Maar kerstlampjes zijn ook populair. De lichtjes moeten in ieder geval de duisternis en het kwaad verdrijven.

De Diya's spelen een belangerijke rol in allerlei verhalen:
Zo wezen ze prins Rama de weg terug naar zijn koninkrijk nadat hij jarenlang in het bos had moeten leven.
De lichtjes verwelkomen ook Lakshmi Maa het huis binnen, de geluksgodin die het huishouden en het gezin beschermt.

Op zaterdag 19 oktober 2024 werd Diwali op de Esplanade gevierd met Surinaams-Indiaase Eten/Drinken, Muziek/dans en eindshow met vuurwerk.
En Natuurlijk was boyke er ook. geniet ze lieve mensen.

What is Diwali?

On Diwali, Hindus celebrate the festival of lights. The word 'Diwali' means 'a row of lights'. These lights are traditionally earthenware lamps that burn oil or melted butter. But Christmas lights are also popular. In any case, the lights must dispel darkness and evil.

The Diyas play an important role in all kinds of stories:
In this way, they showed Prince Rama the way back to his kingdom after he had had to live in the forest for years.
The lights also welcome Lakshmi Maa into the house, the goddess of fortune who protects the household and the family.

On Saturday, October 19, 2024, Diwali was celebrated on the Esplanade with Surinamese-Indian Food/Drinks, Music/dance and a final show with fireworks.
