Описание к видео Stephen Monahan - Why do I still love you (1968)

Stephen Monahan hails from Detroit, Michigan.
His father, a drum instructor, got sixteen-year old Stephen signed to the Rayco label with his group, the Tremelos, in 1959. Their first release was ‘Cackle’ / ‘The Weird One’, an instrumental which received a lot of local airplay. It was followed up with ‘Annabelle Lee’.
Then Stephen had a record out on VeeJay as a solo artist in 1961, ‘Leaves Of Fall’ / ‘Handsome Guy’. His seventeen-year-old friend Dan Bourgeoise arranged the deal after sending a demo tape to Veejay. The Tremelos backed the two tracks. In 1964 Stephen and Dan met up with Del Shannon at the Norwest Lanes Club when the band called Del up to sing a few tunes.
The three quickly became friends and cut some demonstration records with Doug Brown of The Omens (aka Fontaine Brown) and Del at United Sound Studios in Detroit. Del’s wife Shirley encouraged Stephen and Dan to write together. Del , Fontaine Brown, Max Crook, Harry Balk, Dan Bourgoise and Stephen all decided to leave for California around the same time.
In 1965 Dan had to leave for Army service in Tennessee, and Del and Stephen went out on tour with Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars. The tour went through Millington, where Dan was stationed. This was also to be the same base where Stephen would later be stationed. After the tour, he had to go into active duty. Dan got out, and moved to California with Del and his family. Dan rented an apartment, and when Stephen got out, he moved there.
In 1966 and 1967, Stephen sang some background vocals on Del’s ‘Total Commitment’ and ‘The Further Adventures Of Charles Westover’ albums. He also worked with Snuff Garrett at Liberty on some other projects.
Dan negotiated a deal with Kapp Records who released an album, ‘Stephen Monahan’, with a number of songs co-written by Tom Lazaros, an old friend from Detroit. Lazaros later collaborated on some very successful country songs in Nashville.
‘City Of Windows’ was the only one of Stephen’s three Kapp singles to chart, reaching No.78 US. Follow-ups ‘Play While She Dances’ / ‘Iron Horse’ and ‘Newberry Barn Dance’ / ‘Long Live The King’ sunk without trace.
In 1970, Jamie released ‘Flying Machine’ / ‘A Little Bit’, following up in 1971 with ‘Gonna Dream Me A World’ / ‘You Didn’t Mean To Make It Rain’.
In the early seventies, Stephen co-produced (with Bud Reneau) ‘Oh How Happy’ for Del Shannon. Del was unhappy with his career and looking for inspiration at that time. They also cut ‘Black Is Black’ and ‘I Fought the Law’ at the same session, but the tracks were never completed. (Del incorporated ‘Black Is Black’ as a staple in his live shows)
Tom Lazaros and Stephen Monahan started Free Breez Music in the 1970s. Over the years they have written and/or produced numerous songs used by Del Shannon, Eddie Rabbit, George Jones, John Anderson, and others.
Stephen currently runs a very successful chiropracter practice in Jacksonville, Florida.
