A lumbar sympathetic block is an injection of Local Anaesthetic in your lower back to provide pain relief to your legs and feet. It can also help with other bodily functions like sweating and blood flow issues. Healthcare providers may recommend the block for several conditions, such as complex regional pain syndrome, phantom limb pain and hyperhidrosis. If the block is successful in providing pain relief a radiofrequency ablation is done for long-term pain relief.
The lumbar sympathetic nerves are part of the autonomic nervous system that control involuntary functions like breathing, sweating and blood pressure. Sometimes, these nerves can send pain signals after an injury or due to certain diseases. A lumbar sympathetic block targets these nerves and can interrupt the pain signals or reduce inflammation.
The procedure involves lying on your stomach on a table, receiving a mild sedative, getting an injection of local anaesthetic near the spine, and then getting another injection of numbing medication near the lumbar sympathetic nerves.
