Linea nigra is a physiological form of hyperpigmentation. It commonly occurs in pregnancy, often in association with hyperpigmentation of many other areas of the body. On the midline of the anterior abdominal wall is a hypopigmented vertical line known as the linea alba, which may or may not normally be visible. It is the darkening of this line which is referred to as linea nigra.
