Описание к видео History of Constitutions with Dr. Linda Colley of Princeton University

Today, we have with us noted historian Sushri Linda Colley on our show.

Today, we will discuss Linda's book 'The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen: Warfare, Constitutions, and the Making of the Modern World.'

Starting not with the United States, but with the Corsican constitution of 1755, The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen moves through every continent, disrupting accepted narratives. Throughout, Colley demonstrates how constitutions evolved in tandem with warfare, and how they have functioned to advance empire as well as promote nations, and worked to exclude as well as liberate. This is one of the most original global histories in decades.

Linda Colley is the Shelby M.C. Davis 1958 Professor of History at Princeton University. She is an expert on British, imperial, and global history.

08:55 - When was the first constitution ever drafted? What is the story behind it?
12:16 - What is the need to bring in a pen and write down the constitution? Isn't it just a set of guiding principles on how to administer masses? It's not that the written principles don't get flouted. So how does writing and codifying help?

27:12 - Challenge in writing the constitution of India
