The Meat and Fish (2011)
A little about this thing:
I'm very happy I found this yesterday. I remember there was one floating around some years ago, but it disappeared. I haven't looked at this since 2012 or 13. It was a hell of a project to do. The script was 7 pages, and outside of the performers, it was a 2 man production. Cabos and myself did everything. It made me realize some important things: it's quite easy to look at something and not realize what amount of work went into it just by the images you see, the end result is all you see--you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and it is of no concern--which it shouldn't be.
But also, operating as writer, director, producer, camera, production sound (guy never came back after the first day), caterer, and everything else required under the sun... this little project taught me a lot, and made me respect all of the people who do the positions I tried to do all at once. And it made me thankful for people who work for nothing. It also taught me an important lesson about director focus. As a director, I must have time with the actors to be able to get what I want, to focus on what I want, and find what I want. If I don't, the proof is in the pudding, which is all that is in the end. Having my hands in too many things just takes too much time away from what is most important, and was it ever important here. So much so, that I'm still amazed to this day that we were able to complete this in 3 (4-5hr) days on nothing but food, sweat, anguish, and tenacity. I'm also excited because I love finding old work that I did and picking it apart to see what I could have done better or changed (if it wasn't a 2 man show). Also, it's great because I thought this was lost forever, and being able to look at it with fresh eyes is amazing. Time does really remove your snow blindness.
It isn't a masterpiece, it is what it is. There is no denying that, but I am not ashamed of it. It taught me a lot, and I learned a hell of a lot more making this short than on productions with 50 people.
The heat was a nightmare, the production was a nightmare, blocking restrictions, noise, the editing... you name it, it punished us. Everything from beginning to end was terrifically bad, but, the people... the people were great--and that in the end was the only reason this was ever finished, truly. I am happy to share it, and I hope I never lose it again.
Maybe some day I'll explain the philosophy I had for the good and the bad in this thing, hence its weird title.
