Amy Protscher, solo piano: In A Mellow Tone (Ellington/Gabler) - Official Video

The Ellington book is full of dramatic "mood" pieces that sound as fresh today as the day they were recorded. This one is the exact opposite, a happy-go-lucky romper based on the older standard "Rose Room". With bass revolutionary Jimmy Blanton on board, the 1940 Ellington orchestra was arguably the best he ever had, propelling trumpeter Cootie Williams and altoist Johnny Hodges to impressive solo statements. Another wonderful rendition is the one by Ernestine Anderson with Benny Carter on alto. Here's my stripped-down version for your enjoyment.

This was recorded live at Greve Studio, Berlin-Zehlendorf, on May 10, 2020, as part of a concert livecast during the Corona pandemic. (Stay healthy, folks!)

Das Duke Ellington-Repertoire ist voller dramatischer Meisterstücke, die heute noch so frisch klingen wie bei ihrer ersten Aufnahme. Diese Nummer ist das glatte Gegenteil, eine unbeschwerte kleine Melodie, die auf den Akkorden des älteren Standards "Rose Room" basiert. 1940 hatte Ellington mit dem revolutionären Bassisten Jimmy Blanton wohl seine beste Band, die Trompeter Cootie Williams und Altsaxgröße Johnny Hodges zu Höchstleistungen antrieb. Eine andere wunderbare Aufnahme ist die von Ernestine Anderson mit Benny Carter am Alt. Hier ist meine minimalistische Version.

Die Live-Aufnahme im Rahmen einer Konzertübertragung während der Corona-Pandemie ist am 10. Mai 2020 im Greve Studio, Berlin-Zehlendorf entstanden. (Bleibt mir gesund!)
