Roles, role descriptions, and responsibilities are a permanent element of the company’s structure. Roles create a structure and give a sense of certainty and stability. However, in today’s changing business environment, traditionally rigid roles can be a significant constraint and negatively affect the innovation and flexibility of the organisation. In complex systems, the quality of interaction between roles is far more important than the roles themselves. This is especially important in an agile environment that promotes teamwork. I’ll present some ideas that go beyond traditional role definitions to create a flexible and adaptable ecosystem of roles and responsibilities.
