DJ Models - Class 71 'HA' Electric Locomotive Review

A review of the eagerly anticipated DJModels Class 71 'HA' Electric Locomotive in smart British Rail Blue Livery.
Announced back in July of 2014, the DJmodels Class 71 is not only the first ready to run electric locomotive from the manufacturer, but the first UK 00 gauge locomotive to be successfully financed by crowd funding.
Built in 1958, 24 class 71’s were constructed at the British Rail workshops in Doncaster, as part of the modernization plan of 1955. The locos main power supply was from a 3rd rail, though pantographs were also fitted for overhead connection in yards, were a 3rd rail system was deemed too hazardous for workers.
In operation the 71’s proved very popular with crews on both express passenger and heavy freight workings, thanks to their excellent reliability and astonishing acceleration. The Class also saw service hauled many iconic expresses, such as the famous Golden Arrow and Night Ferry, as well as Pullman Services.
Due to their reliance on an electrical supply, the class was later phased out, in favour of electro-diesels, such as the class 73. In 1968 10 members of the class were converted into electro-diesels, known as the class 74, though like 14 remaining members of the class, they were all withdrawn by 1977.
1 member of the class has survived into preservation and is part of the National Collection.
DJModes have done a superb job in capturing the overall look of these iconic locomotives. The model though out, features a high level of detail, including fully detailed cab interior and directional lighting, as well as a weighty die-cast construction, plus smooth and powerful running straight from the box. It really is a must for any Southern Region modeller!
