Sgt. 1st Class Jake Harpster discusses his approach to performing the xylophone excerpt from George Gershwin's "Overture to Porgy and Bess," a frequently requested passage in military band and orchestral percussion auditions.

SFC Harpster serves as Percussionist/Assistant Principal Timpanist with The U.S. Army Concert Band “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, D.C. Known for his versatility, Harpster has performed widely across genres and continents. In the Broadway idiom, he toured the United States, South Korea, and all forty-seven prefectures of Japan as the featured marimba soloist and percussionist with the Tony and Emmy award-winning production BLAST.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Harpster has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia, and is an active commissioner and advocate of contemporary music. Prior to joining “Pershing’s Own,” he performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and held the ACA Timpani Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival.

An experienced educator, Harpster serves as the Director of Percussion for The Capitol Symphonic Youth Orchestras in Washington, D.C. He has taught the percussion section of the DCI World Champion and Fred Sanford Percussion Award–winning Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, led masterclasses nationwide, and taught at nationally recognized high school programs including Center Grove (IN), Coppell (TX), and Marian Catholic (IL).

Harpster holds a Master of Music in Percussion Performance with related field work in Contemporary Music Performance from the University of North Texas, where he served as a Teaching Fellow. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he was awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate.
