Chaitola the weeklong celebration of the folk festival of eastern Kumaon regions of Champawat and Pithoragarh districts, bordering Mahakali valley of far western Nepal, concluded on Tuesday after the sedan ridden deities reflected into personified humans, met with each other in the gesture of goodwill used to have prevailed essentially among various landlords of a bygone era.

The festival, described by some historians to have descended from Garhwal region on the patterns of Chantoli ( sacred umbrella) worship of goddess Nanda, began on April 7 in Gumdesh region of Champawat district where the historian consider Caucasian Aryan settled first and later spread in Kali Kumaon region some thousands of years ago. “ it is a festival of worshipping of Chamu devta, who was the first person settled in Gumdesh region of Kali Kumaon almost one thousand years ago and started cultivation in the land of native non-Caucasians after defeating them,” said Padma Dutt Pant, a local cultural historian of Kali Kumaon region. The beginning of Chaitola Mela is made with the singing of ‘ Mangal Geet or goodwill songs by village women and taking the sedan of the Chamu Devta to each corner of all nearby villages to have the blessing of the deity for all the devotees. “Not only people from all 12 villages of the region, but also from nearby villages of Nepal come to have the blessing of the deity who is considered a Bhumia, or landlord deity of the local region,” said Pandma Dutt Pant.

According to the traditions, the brave acts of the deity are sung by men and women both in the local dance style called ‘Duska’ “ the local style of Duska singing is unique in itself and attracts the people who reach the Chamdeval temple to attend the annual Chaintola Mela,” said Pant. In Sor valley of the Pithoragarh region, Chaitola Mela is celebrated on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the moon (Sukla paksha) a colourful sacred umbrella reflecting the presence of local deity Develsamet was taken to all 22 villages that came under cultivation after the Devalsamet established himself on the terrain and started cultivation after defeating the already inhabited people from Caucasian ethnicity. “ Development was the deity who in historical era defeated people of food gathering community inhibiting in the Sor valley and established the occupation of cultivation,” said Dr Deepak Upreti a scholar and local historian.

According to the tradition the sedan of deity Devalsamet started from Bin village on the fourteenth moon day and immersed in the temple of a deity at the same village after touring over 22 villages for two days, “the sedan that begin from Chaisar village on Tuesday reached Ghantakarn temple to meet other’ Avtars’ of landlords of the bygone era, from the villages of Kumaor, Jakhni and Lunthura in the gesture of goodwill that used to be essential in mid-era when the tussle for the portion of land was common,” said Upreti. According to the information the Chaitola festivities were also celebrated in other parts of Kali Kumaon and the Pithoragarh region. In some villages, the villagers take sedans and colourful sacred umbrellas of local deities and take them to all corners of the villages, in aspiration of their prosperity from standing crops and animals.
