U of T is committed to Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and getting everyone to Rethink their attitudes on waste. This video introduces the basics of waste disposal on the St. George campus.⁠

Properly sorting your waste wherever you go is one of the first things that you can do to help support waste diversion and capture. In general, waste can be sorted into the following bins at U of T's St. George campus:⁠

🗑️ 1) Landfill—waste that cannot be reused, recycled or composted. ⁠
⁠
♻️ 2) Containers—including metal cans, cartons, and most plastics. Note: Black plastics and "biodegradable" plastics are not recycled on campus or in the City of Toronto, so should be reused or donated when possible. Otherwise these should be sorted into the landfill bin to avoid contaminating the recycling stream. When in doubt, please avoid tossing items into recycling bins, as it can degrade the quality of the recycling.⁠

📰 3) Paper—Office/writing paper, newspapers, clean paper bags, etc. Tip: Avoid crumpling your paper to increase recycling potential. ⁠

☕ 4) Coffee Cups—Coffee/tea/hot beverage take-out cups (only the cup) can be recycled at St. George campus as part of a special recycling program. Plastic lids that are not black can be sorted with containers/other plastics.⁠

🍏 5) Compost—Organic material and food scraps, including used 100% paper plates and napkins. Most compost bins on campus are located in dining areas to avoid stream contamination.⁠

If used to its fullest extent, U of T’s recycling could potentially cut the amount of waste headed for the landfill by 80% or more! 🌱 ⁠
