The Secret of Chopin’s Piano Technique:

Chopin was a sought-after pedagogue. Although he never finished a method on playing the piano, the composer left us with many precious ideas encoded in his music. Through his delightful piano pieces Chopin proposed an entirely new technique of playing the instrument. In this Bach@Home episode, pianist Magdalena Baczewska discusses the secret of Chopin’s piano technique that is revealed in his famous Waltz in C-sharp minor, op. 64, no. 2.

What was Chopin’s favorite scale and why? What did Chopin assign to his students? Did you know that aside from rethinking the technique of playing, Chopin was also instrumental (no pun intended) in the development of the piano itself.

Magdalena Baczewska is the Director of the Music Performance Program and member of Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University. For more info, visit MagdalenaNYC.com
