The Ballysaggartmore Towers, located near Lismore in County Waterford, Ireland, are striking Gothic-style ruins that were part of an unfinished estate built in the early 19th century. Constructed in the 1830s, these towers were commissioned by Arthur Kiely-Ussher, a wealthy Anglo-Irish landlord, as part of an elaborate entrance to a mansion that was never completed.

History

Arthur Kiely-Ussher inherited the Ballysaggartmore estate and sought to showcase his wealth through the construction of grandiose gate lodges, bridges, and ornamental towers. The towers were built in the Gothic Revival style, designed to impress visitors and symbolize the owner’s affluence. However, this lavish project was undertaken during a time of great hardship in Ireland, preceding the Great Famine (1845–1852).

While the project provided temporary employment to local laborers, many saw it as a vanity endeavor, especially given the poverty and suffering of the local population. The mansion that was meant to accompany the towers was never completed, reportedly due to financial difficulties or the impracticality of Kiely-Ussher’s vision.

The estate fell into decline after the Ussher family’s fortunes waned, and the remaining structures became ruins.

Description

Today, the Ballysaggartmore Towers consist of two main structures:
• A large gate lodge with arched doorways and crenellated battlements.
• A smaller bridge-like structure, also featuring Gothic arches and decorative stonework.

Both structures are surrounded by woodland trails, making them a popular destination for walkers and history enthusiasts. The towers are celebrated for their picturesque quality and remain a reminder of Ireland’s turbulent social and economic history during the 19th century.
