Thermo King is expanding its zero-emission refrigeration lineup with the all-electric A-500e, now undergoing field trials in North America. Already running on roads across Europe, Thermo King said the A-500e eliminates the need for diesel, cuts operating noise, and reduces service complexity while maintaining the reliable cooling performance fleets expect.

In this episode of On The Road, we take a closer look at what makes the A-500e stand out. Thermo King’s Vice President of Product Management, Chris Tanaka, walks us through the unit’s design and what fleet operators can expect. The A-500e is built on Thermo King’s modular Advancer platform and uses the same long-standing X-430 compressor that many technicians already know—just without the engine. That means no fuel costs and fewer maintenance intervals.

The system is designed to be power-agnostic, capable of running from battery packs, shore power, or additional power sources like solar and axle-based regenerative systems. Battery size and type can be tailored to specific fleet needs, and multi-zone cooling options are available for operations that require temperature control flexibility.

Although originally designed for European duty cycles, the A-500e has been reengineered by Thermo King’s North American team to meet the region’s performance and durability standards. The result is a slim, lighter-weight system with full refrigeration capability, and no tailpipe emissions.
