Welcome to Munro’s Books. This magnificent bookstore is located at 1108 Government St, Victoria BC, Canada.
Come on this journey at Munro’s Books with me. We will explore the beauty of the main floor of the bookstore in the first segment. The second segment is a private tour of the vaults, which is downstairs and is book storage.
Originally built for the Royal Bank of Canada in 1909 by architect, Thomas Hooper. The Royal Bank of Canada used this location on Government St until 1963, when it moved to its current location on Douglas St.
As with any bank, employees are watched and monitored to ensure proper banking practices are followed and adhered to. When an employee of a bank is found to be less than honest, the outcome is not a favourable one, and often leads to termination. This was the case with a young lady that worked in this location for the Royal Bank many years ago. The young lady was caught embezzling from the bank. When the crime was discovered, the police came to the bank to have a chat with the young lady. She knew her criminal activity had been discovered. Instead of facing the consequences of her actions, the young lady took the gun that was used to protect the bank from robbers, and used it on herself, and ended her life.
Over the years, since the young ladies untimely end of life, her ghost has made its presence known on many documented occasions. The young ladies ghost has been rumoured to have books simply fall off a shelf for no explainable reason as customers are browsing. If you are a believer in ghosts or spirits, this a a site worth visiting in Victoria, BC.
After the Royal Bank of Canada closed this location, it was purchased and became Munro’s Books. Founded in 1963 by Jim Munro and his first wife Alice Ann Munro. After much reading herself, Alice felt she could write better books, and she did just that.
Alice and Jim Munro divorced in 1972 and Alice moved back to her birth province of Ontario. Alice Munro’s writing has garnered her many accolades, including Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013 as a “master of the contemporary short story”. Other accolades include the Governor General’s Literary Award for English language fiction (1968,1978 and 1986), along with many other impressive literary awards.
In 1976 Jim Munro married Carole Sabiston. The exceptional tapestries that adorn the high walls of the bookstore represent the fours seasons. Carole Sabiston’s textile art has an extensive collection of well earned art awards, including the Order of British Columbia, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 125th Canada Medal. Carole’s amazing art can be seen at different locations around Victoria, BC.
In July of 2014, Jim Munro decided to retire and at the age of 85, gave his bookstore business to four staff members. After 50 years of Munro’s Books, Jim owns this spectacular Heritage Building that today showcases his name.
I am grateful for the staff that work at Munro’s Books. In my experience as a customer, the team is always pleasant, kind, accommodating and knowledgeable.
To walk into Munro’s bookstore, is a step into a warm, inviting display of some of the most amazing tapestry art I have ever seen. The neatly stacked books, that number in the thousands, is an ever changing display of art in themselves.
Having a lifelong career as a banker, the downstairs is where I couldn’t wait to explore. I was not disappointed. The old vaults were not what I was envisioning to see, it was far more exciting. The old vaults don’t hold money or documents anymore, they hold the keys to knowledge. The keys to knowledge is books, books, and more books. Downstairs is the perfect place to store books that will eventually work their way to the main floor and out the door.
Thank you Sarah, for granting me access to the downstairs and for your educational tour. The tour of the downstairs vaults, was defiantly a highlight of putting this project together. My excitement is very real and I have to laugh at my own genuine happiness.
