Today we are going to looking at the difference between Detention vs Demurrage in ocean shipping.
There is often confusion over the difference between these two similar sounding terms and they are both often referred to as just Detention.
After the container arrives at the port of destination, the carrier gives several days to recover the containers, get customs clearance and unload the container.
Detention is charges applied after the free days are used for keeping the container out of the yard for too long.
Demurrage is charges applied after the free time is used for keeping the container in the port or rail yard for too long.
