This Technics SL1500 turntable is behaving very weird - variable speed issue

This old 1976 Technics SL1500 has a strange problem. It won’t play at a constant speed! Can we exorcise the issue?

These direct drive turntables are built solid, but they can sometimes exhibit a strange behaviour where the speed fluctuates. This can also affect other record players in the same series, such as the ever popular SL1200. This is often down to dirty contacts in the various potentiometers that govern the speeds. In this video we examine the problem, disassemble the unit, and attempt to resolve the fault.
